Your Ship Bottom Municipal Court Summons
Karen M. Garcia, the Deputy Court Administrator, can answer basic questions about your summons and give you some information from your case file. She can also advise you of court procedures and help you fill out court forms.
However, a Court Administrator cannot offer you legal advice, or tell you the possible outcomes of bringing your case to trial. It is recommended that you consult a knowledgeable Ship Bottom attorney in order to fully understand your options for resolving your municipal court summons.
Required Court Appearance in Ship Bottom
Although many violations, such as parking and traffic tickets, are payable offenses, some offenses mandate a court appearance. You will be notified of this requirement by a summons, on which the “court appearance required” box has been checked. If an appearance is not required, you may choose to plead guilty and pay the fine, or plead not guilty and request a hearing.
If you are choosing to plead not guilty, you must notify the Court Administrator at least 7 days prior to your court date. Not doing so often results in the Prosecutor not being prepared to hear your case, which means you will have to come back on a separate court date.
You have the right to hire an attorney to represent you at your hearing. Having a lawyer is helpful, since it will allow you to request for a postponement in order to prepare a defense. Your attorney can also subpoena witnesses to testify on your behalf, and attempt to negotiate a plea agreement with the Prosecutor. Having a lawyer also helps you get heard faster, since Ship Bottom Municipal Court usually hears pleas of not guilty for defendants without a lawyer last.

The Origin of Ship Bottom, NJ
The borough of Ship Bottom is located in Ocean County, NJ. It is known as the “Gateway to Long Beach Island”, and borders the Atlantic Ocean. According to local historian John Bailey Lloyd, the borough's name dates back to 1817, and is attributed to an unusual shipwreck.
In March 1817, a schooner lost in the fog was spotted by the crew of Captain Stephen Willmets. Captain Willmets rescued a woman who was trapped in the ship's bottom, near the keel. Unfortunately, the name of the woman and the ship were never recorded, but the site on which she was taken ashore was named “Ship Bottom”.
