Understanding Your Oceanport Municipal Court Summons
Oceanport Municipal Court is a court of “limited jurisdiction” as defined by the New Jersey Courts System. The court typically deals with violations committed within its own municipal borders, most of which are motor vehicle offenses, DWI's, and minor criminal offenses.
A court appearance is always required for criminal charges, but less serious charges may be deemed as payable offenses. If you are required to appear in court, the “court appearance required” box will be checked on your summons. If it is not, you can choose to either pay the ticket, or appear in court to contest your charges.
A knowledgeable Oceanport, NJ attorney can offer legal advice to help you decide whether or not to appear in court. Keep in mind that paying your ticket is an automatic guilty plea, and can result in damaging consequences to your livelihood.
