Rumson Municipal Court Judge and Staff

Court cases for Rumson Municipal Court are heard by Municipal Judge Richard B. Thompson.  The court office is headed by Carol Ann Dice, the Court Administrator.  Court sessions take place in the Callman Court Building, which is located next to the Rumson Borough Hall.

Attending a Court Session at Rumson Municipal Court

Rumson Municipal Court holds court sessions every second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m.  It is imperative that you do not fail to appear in court if the “court appearance required” box is checked on your summons or ticket.  If you do not appear, a warrant for your arrest and a bail amount will be issued by the judge.
It is always best to arrive early for your hearing, so that you have ample time to check in with the Court Administrator.  The court requires that cell phones are shut off or silenced before entering the courtroom.  Food and drinks are not allowed in the courtroom, nor should you talk unless it is your turn to do so.  Court sessions are sound recorded, so any unnecessary noise or overlapping of voices is highly disruptive to the recording process.
Rumson Municipal Court recommends that you seek the advice of an attorney concerning your charges.  The Court Administrator will be able to give you information from your case file and answer basic questions concerning your summons, but she cannot offer you legal advice.  An experienced Rumson attorney can protect your rights and prevent long term damage to your future.

Facilities and Handicap Access at Rumson's Court

Types of Cases Heard at Rumson Municipal Court

Rumson Municipal Court typically hears cases for minor criminal offenses (disorderly persons or petty disorderly persons), motor vehicle offenses and municipal ordinance violations.  Most charges are motor vehicle related, such as unregistered vehicle, careless driving, failure to wear a seatbelt and speeding.

Payable Offenses at Rumson Municipal Court

A payable offense does not require a court appearance, though you may wish to appear to contest your charges.  In this case, you must submit a not guilty plea to the Court Administrator, which can be done by contacting the court 7 days prior to your payment date.  If you wish to plead guilty and pay the fine, you can do so at the court office during its normal business hours, which are Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
If you have entered a not guilty plea for a payable offense, you must show up at the appointed court date.  Failure to do so will result in a “failure to appear” notice, with an additional penalty.  If you do not pay the full fine and the added penalty by the due date stated on the notice, your driving privileges will be suspended.
Payments for traffic and parking tickets can be submitted online at www.njmcdirect.com.  You must use a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card, and agree to pay a convenience fee in addition to your fine. The convenience fee is based on your penalty amount, and is explained in detail on the NJMC Direct website.
