What Do I Want out of My Divorce?

The answer to this question should be what you are entitled to.  Determining what you are entitled to requires you to consult with an experienced divorce lawyer.  You do not get a do-over in a divorce proceeding so it is important that you get it right the first time.  When contemplating a divorce one of the first things you need to do is familiarize yourself with certain terms like child custody, equitable distribution and alimony.

Most attorneys offer a free divorce consultation. As there is no financial obligation associated with a free consultation, it is a great place to start to get a working knowledge of the various aspects of a divorce proceeding.  During an initial consultation, the divorce lawyer should be able to give you some idea as to what you can expect at the end of your case.  Some lawyers require new prospective clients to pay for an initial consultation.  Make sure you are clear on whether there is a fee or not for the initial consultation before you engage in one.

Another important aspect of going through a divorce is to attempt to ensure that the impact on the children, if any, will be minimalized.  You will want to talk to your attorney about ways to minimize the impact of the divorce on your children.  Your children have done nothing wrong to cause the divorce, so therefore it would be terribly unfair to them to be impacted more than necessary as a result of the divorce process.

In defining your goals for the divorce, you may also want to confer with a divorce coach or therapist as they may be able to assist you in processing the emotional aspects of the divorce proceeding so that you can make decisions that are truly in your family's best interests.

The divorce attorneys at Villani and DeLuca are intimately familiar with all aspects of divorce proceedings.  They will spend the time with you that is required in order to make sure that you understand everything that is happening throughout the process.  Feel free to call today to schedule your free initial divorce consultation.  We offer free consultations over the phone, in person or by way of zoom video conference.
