Are Ski Lift Deaths And Injuries Common?

Posted by Carmine R. Villani | Feb 25, 2015 | 0 Comments

The ski lift might be somewhat terrifying the first time you take one to the top of the mountain, whether it's in Colorado, upstate New York or New Jersey, but the truth is ski lift deaths and injuries are relatively uncommon. According to theskitrade.com, you are more likely to die in an elevator than on a ski lift. (That statistic is not meant to make you afraid of elevators.) In fact, there have only been 15 chair lift deaths reported in the United States during the last four decades. Part of the reason for this is the extensive safety precautions that ski resorts implement. If, however, the ski resort is negligent in maintaining proper safety standards, cause for a personal injury lawsuit may follow.
There have already been a few incidents this year, including one fatality in New York that was caused by a 25-foot fall from a chair lift, but these incidents are generally few and far between. Following this incident (as well as a couple of injuries suffered by falls from lifts), the National Ski Areas Association reiterated the importance of safety practices while riding ski lifts. For instance, you should always keep the safety bar down while riding the lift, which is something that not everyone practices while riding the lift.
Of course, even if you follow all of the rules and regulations, accidents can still occur, especially at a ski resort. For instance, more injuries occur coming down the mountain as opposed to traveling up the mountain. Even if you are experienced at skiing, you can still get hurt, especially if someone else is not paying attention. Many injuries take place when someone is not being observant of their surroundings. If this happens, you may be entitled to compensation.
The ski resort itself also has a responsibility to make mountains and facilities safe, within reason. The fact is that while skiing is a dangerous sport, there are certain safety regulations that resorts should maintain. If you are hurt while on vacation because of negligent behavior, make sure you contact a personal injury lawyer to represent your rights.
If you have been injured this winter, reach out to a personal injury attorney today. You may be entitled to compensation. Contact the law firm of Villani & DeLuca to learn more at 732-709-7757.
