Between July 2012 and June 2013, Atlantic Highlands charged a total of 449 criminal offenses, including 175 indictable offenses which is a 48% increase from the previous year. In the category of motor vehicle violations, there were 20 DWI and 1,176 moving violations charged.
If you have an indictable charge, it will be handed up to the Monmouth County Superior Court in Freehold. Indictable offenses are often called felonies in other states, and they’re more serious than disorderly persons charges. The key difference is that the defendant is potentially exposed to more than 6 months in jail for indictable offenses.

What to Expect on Your Day at Atlantic Highlands Court

Court appearance is required for all criminal matters, DWI charges, and if “court appearance required” is checked on your summons. You must appear even if you intend to plead guilty. The procedure is for defendants, or their attorneys, to check in with the borough prosecutor before your scheduled court session. You or your attorney will advise the prosecutor as to whether you’re pleading guilty or not guilty.
It’s always to your benefit to plead not guilty because you will gain the opportunity to negotiate with the prosecutor to plead guilty to a lesser charge. It’s highly recommended that you obtain the advice of an experienced Atlantic Highlands Borough Municipal Court lawyer, who will conduct these negotiations to get your charges reduced as low as possible. The severity of your charges will have lasting repercussions on your criminal record.
