Effect of Divorce on Children

Advice for Those with Kids Going Through a NJ Divorce

Divorce ChildWhen going through a divorce in New Jersey, it is very important that you not involve your children in your adult problems. Children of divorcing couples have done nothing wrong and they should not be burdened with the emotional issues that are related to a New Jersey divorce proceeding. The children will be going through enough as it relates to the eventual separation of their parents. It is very important that throughout the divorce process the children are not triangulated and placed in the middle of their parents’ problems. The parents should periodically reassure the children that they are loved by Mom and Dad very much, and the divorce will not change that in any way. During a divorce, children need structure more so than any other time in their lives. Whatever you do, make sure that you do not put the kids in the middle. The children should never be used as pawns to get back at your spouse.

Treating Your Ex-Spouse with Respect

It is very important for divorced parents to remember that, although they are no longer together, they will always be the children’s mom and dad. They should always try to treat one another with civility, especially in the presence of the children. Often times it is recommended that a divorcing couple engage in therapy to help build a support system for themselves throughout the divorce process. It may also be helpful to consult with a therapist when going through a divorce and to authorize your therapist to speak with your attorney. The therapist will thereby be made aware of what is going on in the legal proceeding and the attorney benefits as he has a better understanding of the emotional issues that his client is facing. With such a team concept in place there exists a greater likelihood that the children will be less affected by the divorce.
