Man Attempts to Steal Ambulance While Intoxicated

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, someone comes along and does something you would never expect. One such man accomplished that feat in Perth Amboy, NJ earlier this month by attempting to steal an ambulance while paramedics were responding to an emergency in a nearby home. This bizarre crime may sound like something out of a movie, but he and his story are very real, according to NJ.com.

While the paramedics were off doing their job, the man decided it would be a really good idea to take their mode of transportation for a spin. Maybe he was just trying to help, or maybe he just always wanted to be an EMT. Whatever his intentions were, he was charged with a DWI for all his efforts.

“Emergency Medical personnel were rendering aid to a resident in the area when they heard the siren of their ambulance go off,” Perth Amboy police said in a statement. “This is a safety feature and only activated when the vehicle is shifted out of park.”

Once the EMTs realized what was going on, they tried to stop the man, who, according to them, appeared to be significantly inebriated. The man, presumably realizing that he was in no state to actually drive, evacuated the ambulance and attempted to escape on foot. That plan did not work out for the man, who was caught quickly and turned in to the police. He was then charged with attempted theft of a vehicle and driving while intoxicated.

DWI Defense

Luckily, stories like these are few and far between. The majority of criminal and DWI cases are not quite as exciting as this one. But the one thing that all people charged with a DWI have in common is the right to an attorney.
